How to Prepare for Your Window Cleaning Appointment

Five minutes of prep makes the visit faster and the result better. What we need access to and what you can leave alone.

The short answer

Very little. Clear the path to the windows outside, unlock the side gate, and tell us about anything unusual. That is genuinely most of it — we arrive with shoe covers, drop cloths and our own equipment, and the job is designed around not turning your day upside down.

Below is the short list of things that make the visit faster, plus the longer list of things people worry about unnecessarily.

Outside — the useful part

This is where a few minutes genuinely helps, because exterior access is what slows us down.

  • Unlock gates, or send us the code. The single most common hold-up.
  • Move cars off the driveway if windows face it — it gives us room to set up ladders safely.
  • Pull patio furniture, planters and hoses back from directly under the glass.
  • Turn the sprinklers off for the day if they run on a schedule. Overspray onto glass we have just finished is a frustrating way to undo the work.
  • Trim anything growing hard against a window if you can. Not essential, but it lets us get to the full pane.
  • Secure pets, or tell us where they will be.

Inside, if we are doing interiors

  • Clear the sills. Photo frames, candles, plants and ornaments. This is the one thing worth doing properly, because we would rather not move your things.
  • Open the blinds or pull the curtains back so the glass is reachable.
  • Point out anything fragile near a window — we will work around it.
  • Leave a clear route to the rooms we are working in.

What you can leave alone

People often over-prepare. None of this is necessary:

  • Moving furniture. We work around it.
  • Taking down blinds or curtains. Opening them is plenty.
  • Removing screens. That is part of the job and doing it yourself risks a bent frame.
  • Pre-cleaning the windows. Genuinely — that is what you are paying for.
  • Laying down towels or sheets. We bring our own drop cloths.
  • Being home. See below.

Do you need to be home?

Not for exterior work, and not for the estimate. We can quote the outside of your home without you there at all, which is why "you do not even need to be home for the quote" is something we say often.

For interior work we need to get in, and that is all — a key, a code, a neighbor, or you being there. Plenty of clients on a recurring plan are never home for the visit. If you would rather be there for the first one and not afterwards, that is normal too.

What to tell us beforehand

Any of these are worth a sentence when you book, because they change how we plan the day:

  • Windows that are painted shut, cracked, or already have a damaged screen.
  • Any glass with film on it, so we use the right method on those panes.
  • Upper-story glass or anything over a staircase.
  • Hard-water spotting you want looked at — that is assessed and quoted separately.
  • Awkward access: a pool deck, steep landscaping, a locked side yard, a dog.
  • A time window that matters to you, such as school pick-up or a nap schedule.

After we leave

We walk the work with you before we go, if you are there. If you are not, take a look at the glass when you get back and in the light you normally see it in — low afternoon sun shows far more than midday.

Spot a streak or a missed pane within 48 hours and we come back and fix it free, on qualifying window-cleaning work. That is confirmed on your quote and we would genuinely rather you told us than lived with it.

Common questions

Do I need to be home for window cleaning?

Not for exterior work or for the estimate. For interior work we just need access on the day. Plenty of clients leave a gate code or arrange a key, and we work around whatever suits you.

Do I need to move furniture before window cleaners arrive?

No. We work around what is there and we bring shoe covers and drop cloths. If something heavy or fragile sits right in front of the glass, mention it when you book so we can plan for it rather than find it on the day.

Should I take my screens out before you come?

No — leave them. Removing and refitting screens is part of the job and doing it yourself risks bending a frame. Just tell us if any are already damaged so we know before we handle them.

What about my pets?

Tell us they are there and we will work with it. Gates get opened and closed repeatedly during exterior work, so it helps to know whether a dog is in the yard or needs to stay in. Our solutions are pet-safe.

Do you need access to water or power?

Usually an outside tap is helpful but we arrive equipped, so it is not a problem if one is not available or is not working. Mention it in advance and we will plan around it.

What if I spot something after we have left?

Tell us within 48 hours and we come back and fix it free. That applies to qualifying window-cleaning work and it is confirmed on your quote.
