It works because the outside is brighter than the inside. Once the sun is down and your lamps are on, your room becomes the bright side and the effect runs the other way.
That is physics rather than a fault, and it is true of any product sold as "one-way". We would rather you knew before choosing than discover it the first evening. Most homes end up with reflective film doing the heavy lifting all day, plus a blind or a frosted pane on the handful of windows that genuinely need night privacy — usually a bedroom and a bathroom, not the whole house.
